Clarence Croft

East Barnard—Clarence Bertram “Bert” Croft, 80, was called home to the Lord on May 11, 2017. He was born September 17, 1936, in Claremont, N.H., son of Richard J. and Linda N. (Parker) Croft.

Bert attended grade school in Chelsea. After his parents’ divorce, he lived with his father and grandparents, C.B. and Nellie Croft, in Claremont, N.H. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1955 and the New York State Ranger School in Wanakena, N.Y., in 1957. He got his forestry degree from the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating in 1961.

Bert was drafted into the army in 1962. He met his future wife, Charlotte R. Sisil, at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland in August 1962. Bert and Charlotte were married on June 17, 1963, while he was stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. During the 18 months he was in Texas, Bert served as a unit policeman at Mc- Gregor Range, N.M., and also as a morning report clerk. He was discharged from active duty on March 31, 1964.

From June 1, 1964 until 1989, Bert was employed by the New England Forestry Foundation. As a consulting forester, he provided services to private landowners in Vermont. He was based at Hawk’s Hill in East Barnard, where he and Charlotte and two-week-old Eric James moved on March 31, 1965. Their son, Johnathan Francis, was born in 1967.

For 25 years Bert and Charlotte were members of Silver Lake Chapel in Barnard. In 1991, they began attending the First Congregational Church in Woodstock, which they joined on Easter Sunday 1992.

Bert is survived by his wife, Charlotte; their two sons, Eric (Sue), of Rock City Falls, N.Y., and Johnathan (Sandy), of Essex, Vt.; five grandchildren: Michael, Sheila, Andrew, Cameron, and Nathan; one great-granddaughter, Natalie; a sister, Mary Osgood of Corinth, Vt.; and brothers, Dick of Chelsea, and Canal Winchester, Ohio, Rodney of East Barnard, and Harlie Parker of Chelsea.

There will be a memorial service at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock on Sunday May 21 at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Ashley-Ellis Cemetery in East Barnard at a later date.
