(Provided) I t was a dark and rainy evening last Saturday, May 13 when a crowd gathered to witness a world-record marble run in South Strafford.

By the time the marble took the course, over a hundred people had gathered at the Newton School. The run, a line of sugaring tubing, went from more than a mile and a half up Route 132 to a plastic pot set up at the finish line at the school.

“Team Marbleous,” a group of community members, teachers, and students led by parent Dustin Ray, were nervous before the event. The team had tested the marble run beforehand, but it had made it only two out of 12 times.

Ray spoke to the crowd before the event, expressing his jitters and his hopes about it working again in front of the crowd. And, of course, they needed to get it photographed and on video as evidence to submit to the Guinness Book of World Records.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, Dustin Ray, head of Team Marbleous, sent the marble down 8,650 feet of the one-inch diameter tube. The official Guinness World record they hoped to break is 4,221.16 feet.

Some minutes later, not knowing if the marble was progressing or stuck in some tricky spot, lights were spied going on. People surged forward as the lights blinked, triggered by the marble rolling through the tubing.

The crowd let out a collective roar when they heard the marble clink into the flowerpot attached at the end of the line. The run took about 15 minutes. Team Marbleous had done it!

Ray will be submitting the evidence package, and asked that anyone who witnessed this moment and has any photos or video of the event, contact him at dsray2@gmail.com.
