White River Valley Players Celebrate a Busy Year
The White River Valley Players held their annual meeting for members Friday, Feb. 10 at Rochester High School.
The board of directors presented the past year in review, including the spring 2011 show, “Play On!,” the Patti Casey and Pete Sutherland concert, the May Pole dance at the Rochester Block Party, scholarships given at Rochester High School graduation, the prize for the best overall entry in the Rochester Fourth of July Parade, sponsoring “Crazy Chase,” a one-man musical show from the Northeast Kingdom; performing a shortened version of the Players original show “Ransom” at the White River Historical Fair, “Ransom” DVDs produced and sold, the annual kids’ performing arts camp, and the annual Harvest Fair.
The year also included Vermont Teen Theater’s “The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet;” playwriting and songwriting workshops; “More Than Gravel Was Stirred,” original songs and short plays written in the aftermath of Irene; raising funds to replace the ruined seating in the RHS auditorium through the “Save a Seat!” Fund; and “The Night Before The Night Before Christmas,” a fundraiser for the seating fund and the local food shelf.
Board members elected for 2012 included Dorothy Robson and Cynthia Ryan, co-presidents; Amy Braun, vice president; Mindy Branstetter, secretary; Joan Petrillo, treasurer; Marissa Achee, Ginny Scott Bowman, Abby Leathers, Jennie Marx, Zoe Neumarco, Janine Reeves, Martha Slater, Kep Taylor, and John Wong.
Desmond and Donovan Piccicuto and their mom, Amy Braun, presented a reprise of the short play “Dreams Come True,” written by Susie Smolen, and Danny Dover recited one of his poems, “Gathering.”
A community appreciation award was announced for Rochester School Principal Mary Sue Crowley, and another award was presented to Judy Jensen in appreciation of her many years of service as treasurer, costume designer, scenic artist, producer, and much more. Dick Robson and Jeremy Seeger received advisory board awards in recognition of their countless contributions to the WRVP over the past three decades.
A preview of WRVP plans for the year ahead included finishing the restoration of the school auditorium, and “The Follies of 2012,” a blend of music, dance, comedy, drama, and more to celebrate the reopening of that facility on March 31 and April 1. Vermont Teen Theater will present “Doctor Horrible’s Sing- Along Blog” March 16, 17, and 18 at the Tunbridge Town Hall, and there will be a kids’ performing arts camp in the summer, the annual Harvest Fair in September on the Rochester park, a fall show (name and date TBA) and the annual “Night Before The Night Before Christmas” benefit show for local causes.
The evening concluded with a sing-along of special lyrics for “Goodnight, Irene,” plus the Players’ traditional sweet and savory buffet, and an opportunity to get a sneak peek at the restoration work in progress in the auditorium.
