West Rochester Memories Feb. 26
The Rochester Historical Society will sponsor “Robinson: Pictures & Stories of a West Rochester Hamlet,” Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Green Mountain Forest Service building on Route 100, a couple of miles north of Rochester village.
The guest speaker will be Janice Brown, a resident of Bingo in West Rochester, who will share her wealth of history and her collection of vintage photos of the Robinson, Bingo, and West Rochester sections of Rochester. She will also share stories of events that took place in this area and of families, among whom were the Towles, the subject of the White River Valley Players production of “Ransom.”
The photos will cover the area from the old CC Camp location to the old Olsen place from about 1900 to the 1960s. Her sources for her stories are her memories, as well as newspaper articles, and will include information about Civil War soldiers from West Rochester, including Ransom Towle and Martin Whitney.
“If all goes well with this event, I hope to do another one next fall, continuing on from the old Olsen place up to the cemetery on West Hill where Ransom Towle and his family are buried,” Brown said.
