Kimball House Weaving Studio Offering Classes and Workshops

There’s been a lot of activity in the White River Craft Center’s Kimball House weaving studio lately.

Four students just finished a weaving class where long samplers of multiple colors were made in more than 30 different weave structures. Three students are still working on table runners, napkins and a scarf. A fourth weaver is working on several block-weave structures.

Two high school seniors have completed samplers and are now working on blankets to complete for their Senior Projects. They have learned the entire weaving process and are continuing to weave other practical items.

The studio will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays in order to allow students and interested people to weave in a place that has all the equipment, yarn and looms needed. An experienced weaver will be available to answer questions and provide guidance. There is a fee for the use of the equipment and to learn how to throw the shuttle or weave off a project that is already set up on a loom.

The Friday fee may be waived if the weaver is willing to weave something which is good enough to sell at the Craft Center. If the weaver would like to keep the project, there will be a modest fee for yarn used, based on weight.

At present, there is a loom set up with a lace weave, suitable for making a hand towel or placemat, and another set up to weave mug rugs (aka coasters for hot or cold beverages). A few looms are also available to rent. Table looms are rented per month and floor looms may be rented for a month.

At least once a month there will be a class of interest for which registration is required. Potential students may also request specific topics.

“Friday Weaving” will take place February 17 and 24 and March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn to throw the shuttle and/or weave off mug rugs or a lace hand towel or placemat on loom that are already set up. Bring your own yarn or use the center’s for a specific project you would like to weave on one of the looms. There will be an additional reasonable fee for yarn used in your projects, which is provided by us, based on weight. These are yours to keep. No registration is required. Check with the weaver in charge for a fee waiver.

“Dressing the Loom from Front to Back” will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 6-9 p.m., with registration by March 4; and Friday, March 9 from 1-4 p.m., with registration by March 6.

“Dressing the Loom from Back to Front” will take place Wednesday, March 21 from 6-9 p.m., with registration by March 18; and Friday, March 23 from 1-4 p.m., with registration by March 20.

These classes review how to warp the loom both front to back or the reverse and talk about which method to use and when they are appropriate. The purpose of this course is to help you become confident and comfortable with warping. Register for any of these classes by calling Susan Rockwell at 728-9728 or the Craft Center at 728-8912.
