Godenschwager’s Art on Exhibit At VTC’s Hartness Gallery

Vermont Technical College’s Hartness Gallery will open a unique exhibition featuring Vermont-based artist Phil Godenschwager on Monday, Feb. 27.

“The Same Old Thing All Over Again, From Another Point of View,” which will stay on view until March 31, will feature 14 works by Godenschwager, whose drawings, designs, and sculptures have been in demand for more than 35 years.

From his Atlantic Art, Glass and Design studio in Randolph, Godenschwager creates multifaceted pieces that deal with social and political issues, current events, and observations about everyday life. This exhibit will feature stained glass, paintings, and sculptures, all reflecting his unique perspective on day-to-day life.

Godenschwager’s commissions have included a commemorative window to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Chandler Music Hall in Randolph; designing and building five stained glass windows for the Abbey of the Genesee, a Trappist monastery in New York; and art directing installations for FAO Schwarz in New York City and Jim Henson Associates in Detroit, Mich.

“I develop my own body of work through drawing, painting, mixed media and, most recently, through experiments with glass as a medium for sculpture. I work the oldfashioned way, using all-natural processes, creative thinking, pen, and paper with high-quality execution,” said Godenschwager, who also teaches architectural board drafting in the Construction Management Program at Vermont Tech.

The Hartness Library art series, which began in 2010, hosts four exhibits each year. The series features local and regional artists, with a focus on showcasing the creative of work of the Vermont Tech community.

The 2012 series includes the work of two Vermont Tech faculty members: Godenschwager, followed by Ward Joyce, a Montpelier-based artist and architect who is also a fulltime faculty member in the College’s Architecture and Building Engineering Department. The exhibit featuring Joyce’s paintings will open in April and run through May 31.
