Carl R. Perkins
South Royalton— Carl Raymond Perkins, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at the home of his daughter and son in law, Gloria and Roland Potwin on Gee Hill In South Royalton, where he had lived for the last few months, due to failing health.
He had most recently lived in Windsor at Olde Windsor Village for the last eight years, and before that, lived in Woodstock at Melishwood Senior Housing.
He was born on Sept 21,1919 in Corinth, the son of Mark Perkins and Nina Goodrich. He was one of seven children.
He worked on his father’s farm and learned to use a team of horses for logging at an early age. He always had a fondness for the woods and was proud of his ability to cut big trees. He logged for many years around Vermont. He was also an ex- perienced truck driver, transporting mail, lumber, and fuel from Massachusetts to Canada.
He never lost his love for being on the road and continued to drive until the month before his death. He held various driving jobs in the Upper Valley area in his 70s and 80s, transporting and picking up vehicles all over New England. He also had numerous newspaper routes.
He fulfilled his dream of going to Alaska, when, in his 70s, he drove a friend with his fifth wheel RV to Alaska and back.
He loved music and played the fiddle, and was a member of The Southern Vt. Fiddlers Assoc. and The Northeast Fiddlers Assoc.
He was married four times, first to Hilda Judd, with whom he had two children, Anthony of White River Jct. and Marilyn of Topsham. He was subsequently married to Marcia Hook and they had 10 children together: Roger of Thetford, Gloria of South Royalton, Beverly of Tunbridge, Marcia of South Royalton, Eddie of Chelsea, Judy of Claremont, N.H., Dennis of Highlands, N.C., Angie of Franklin, N.C., and Timmy of Groton.
He was later married to Dorothy Henderson and then to Frances Watkins.
He was predeceased by four brothers: Clarence, Maurice, Ralph, and an infant who died at birth; and two sisters, Elisabeth and Mildred; a son, Carl Perkins of Groton; and three infant grandchildren.
He had 38 grandchildren; 38t great-grandchildren; and three great- great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his large family and really enjoyed spending time with all of them. He especially enjoyed the family reunions.
There will be a celebration of his life for family and friends Saturday, Feb. 25 from 1-5 p.m. at the Royalton Academy Building in Royalton. If any one wants to bring their musical talents to play music in remembrance of him, they are welcome to do so.
The Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea is handling arrangements.
