February Vacation Workshops For Youth Offered at Chandler

Parents looking for creative, affordable options for their children during February school vacation need look no farther than Chandler Music Hall in Randolph.

The Chelsea Funnery will return with imaginative workshops on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 27 and 28 with morning sessions geared to students in kindergarten through second grade. Afternoon sessions are designed for third through sixth graders.

In both Monday workshop sessions, participants will learn how to build characters with physical attributes and an open imagination. Together they’ll explore the secrets of creating amazing characters such as an 80-year-old princess, a pesky chicken or a terrible villain with a soft spot for cats. The sky’s the limit! Older students will be introduced to the basics of improvisational theater in the afternoon session.

On Tuesday, students will explore physical theater with an introduction to mime and working with stage props. Learn how to ford the river that has suddenly appeared with only a giant red phone and a kazoo! The workshop leaders are looking for strong imaginary rope-pullers and weight-lifters and kids capable of scaling giant walls and surviving long falls. In the afternoon session, older students will work in small groups to create original clown skits.

On Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 29, students in kindergarten through second grade will work with instructors from the Arts Bus.

Youth will begin by acting out their favorite dreams with Sequana Skye. Each participant will get a chance to act as dream director describing a dream they have had, assigning roles to their peers, and then directing a live performance of the dream. There are endless imaginative possibilities in dreamland!

For the second half of this workshop, the kids will delve into the Eric Carle Project with Heather DeLeone. Students will learn how Eric Carle used collage, texture and painting to create the illustrations for his award- winning books. They will experiment using texture plates, crayons and watercolors to create insects. This combined workshop offers both movement and creativity.

All participants are asked to bring clean soft-soled shoes to wear in the Esther Mesh Room in Chandler’s Upper Gallery.

Chandler is offering 50% off admission to one workshop for parents who are willing to run registration prior to each workshop. Contact Claire Garner with any questions or to register by January 31 at 802-522-6877 or upperevents@ chandler-arts.org. A minimum of 10 participants/session is required. Chandler is wheelchair accessible.
