Ruth L. Shumway
SOUTH RANDOLPH-—Ruth L. Shumway, 75, died Friday June 13, 2008 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born January 21, 1933 in Hartland, the daughter of Philo and Vivian (White) Withington.
She attended No. Hartland elementary schools and graduated from Hartford High School in 1951. She worked on her parents’ dairy farm in North Hartland and also worked as a bookkeeper at Greydon Freeman Office Supplies in White River Jct. for a short time. She then moved to New York state for four years, before returning to North Hartland, where she went into partnership with her parents on the Green Acres dairy farm.
She married Francis "Bud" Shumway December 29, 1977 in North Hartland. He died in 1978 and she moved to South Randolph in 1993.
Her memberships included the New England Milking Shorthorn Society, the American Milking Shorthorn Society and the Middle Branch Grange #463 in East Bethel. She enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren, playing the piano, cooking, baking, her cats, bird watching and especially her cows.
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Wortman of Bethel; two brothers, Sam Withington of Hartland and Richard Withington of North Hartland; a sister, Janice Nadeau of Quechee; four grandchildren and her caregivers, Tim and June Withington.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 18 at the Middle Branch Grange Hall (off of Rte. 14) in East Bethel with Rev. Louis Maxfield officiating. Calling hours were held Tuesday evening at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
