Randolph Pitchers Win for Post 3 Randolph's Cody Montgomery and Tim Grandy threw consecutive nine-inning complete games for Montpelier Legion Post 3, against Franklin County and Colchester. Montpelier was victorious 6-3 against Franklin, and 9-6 against Colchester. Montgomery pitched Saturday, and gave up eight hits, had one walk and four strikeouts, with at least 120 pitches. Grandy pitched Sunday vs. Colchester with 10 strikeouts, five walks and threw a total of 198 pitches. Montpelier has swept Colchester this year for the first time in many seasons. Franklin Win Austin Parker went three for five in the leadoff position Saturday, Thomas Jacobs had three hits, and David Maxfield had a pair as well. Post 3 scored single runs in six of nine innings, and had base runners every inning. Post 3 led from the beginning of the game. In the third inning catcher Thomas Jacobs accounted for all three outs as he pegged out the runner trying to steal second, got the runner taking too big a lead off first and got the third runner out in a pickle. In the ninth inning Montgomery got all three outs with two strikeouts and the third out which he got after getting the carom off his right hip from the batsman, which he chased down and still threw the runner out at first from the sitting position. Colchester Win Montpelier jumped out to an early lead over the Colchester Cannons, getting a run across in the first. Colchester answered in the third, after a pair of errors and a wild pitch allowed a run to cross the plate. Post 3 scored four in the third, after Grandy started things off with a double, and Jacobs got on via an error. Eli Sherman's single scored Grandy, and Rob Keene's double off the top of the wall plated Jacobs. Zach LeBlanc hit a line over the third baseman to score Sherman and Keene to put Montpelier ahead 5-1. Montpelier added two runs in the fourth to go ahead 7-1. Colchester scored two in the fifth, and three in the seventh, to close the gap to one, 7-6. Post 3 added a run in the seventh and one in the eighth to go up 9-6. Grandy pitched his best late in the game, striking out six in the final three innings, including the final two outs in the ninth throwing the hardest he had all game. Other Games Post 3 travelled to CVUHS Monday to play SAL Champlain and lost a close one, 5-2. Grandy, Maxfield and Mike Czok all hit singles and Maxfield had a double in the top of the seventh. Montpelier played Essex at home Tuesday and won a close one in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4. Jacobs hit a lead off single, was moved to second by Nathan Segale's bunt, got to third on Montgomery's long out to center field and crossed home plate when Pat Donavan hit what should have been an easy out pop fly to right field that was dropped, for the winning run. Czok had a double in the game, Maxfield hit two singles, Rob Keene hit a triple off the fence and Austin Parker had a double and a single. Post #3's record is 5-8 in League play and 8-12 overall. They played at Dorset Park Wednesday, faced South Royalton at home Thursday, play Franklin at home Saturday and have their final game Sunday versus Essex, away. |
