Sigmund Moses

RANDOLPH- Sigmund Moses, 99, died on July 21, 2007 at his home.

He was born on September 11, 1907 on West Fourth Street in New York City, the son of Moritz and Gazela (Haimowitz) Moses who had immigrated to America from Piotr, Romania in 1899.

He grew up and attended public school in New York. He worked his way through college and law school, earning $12 a week as a stock clerk and taking courses at night. In 1930, he graduated from Brooklyn Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1931. He practiced law continuously in New York for 75 years, until he retired at the age of 98, and moved to Vermont to be close to his wife and daughter.

Growing up, "Sig" was an enthusiastic stickball player on the streets of the city, and later played on and coached a variety of local baseball teams. He also loved to write, study, and ski, especially at Stowe in Vermont. In later years, he became an avid golfer, and was a long-time member of Dellwood Country Club in New City, New York. He was a Past Master of the Perfect Square Lodge of the Masons.

On April 20, 1943, while serving in the Army as a Staff Sergeant, he married Elizabeth Burns Moses. She predeceased him on April 20, 2007. After his discharge, they lived in the Bronx, New York, and in later years, Riverdale, N.Y. and Miami, Fla. Although he never stopped working, he began every day in Florida on the pier at 4:30 a.m. fishing. He and his wife loved to play golf, travel, and commute to work together.

His career as a sole practitioner spanned eight decades, and during that time he represented thousands of clients in probate court, corporate and partnership ventures, real estate transactions, litigation, and more. His cases ran the gamut, both in subject matter and jurisdiction. He was much more than just a lawyer to many: he acted also as confidante, advisor, and friend. He was known for his loyalty, generosity, dedication, intellect and common sense.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Karl Miller of Randolph; his grandchildren, Caitlin Miller of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Aaron Moses Miller; his sister, Esther Moses of New York; his nephew, Martin Friedman and wife Marilyn; and numerous other nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his sisters Rachel Goldenberg, Fanny Sheldon, and Rita Pape.
