Chelsea Girls Lax
By Mary Childs

The rain held off just long enough for the Chelsea girls to take on Hartford in girls lacrosse tournament action last Thursday. The Devils came out strong and Kim Upham tallied the first goal. Not long after that the Devils struck again. The Hartford girls were not going down without a fight, and they responded to Chelsea with a goal of their own, closing the gap to 2-1. Goals were swapped back and forth, but Chelsea slipped in three more to give them a 6-3 advantage at the break.

In the second half Chelsea continued to dominate. Lindsey Smith poured in several goals to build Chelsea's lead. Halfway through the second half Brenda Mannings made an interception and connected with Sam Bonasera to give Chelsea a three-goal advantage. Chelsea's biggest lead was 9-4 midway through the second half.

Hartford rallied back and scored three consecutive goals to bring them within two of the Red Devils. However, Chelsea's Morgan Wadkins picked up the pace on defense as keeper Laura Upham protected the net. Chelsea sent one more goal to the back of the net and limited Hartford's offense to come away with a 10-7 win.

Lindsey Smith scored four goals, Sam Bonasera and Kim Upman tallied two each, Althea Spencer and Hillary Bonasera also scored. Upham had 11 saves for Chelsea. Quarter Finals

Last Saturday the Lady Devils traveled to fourth-seeded Green Mountain Valley School. In the regular season Chelsea defeated them 9-6, and this was one of only two losses for Green Mountain. Pumped up and ready to play, Chelsea came out seemingly unstoppable. Brenda Manning executed a pass to L. Smith for the opening goal. Chelsea never looked back as S. Bonasera and H. Bonasera put the ball in the back of the net. The defense had one of their best first-half games, limiting GMVS to two goals. Chelsea's nonstop pressure and fast breaks put them ahead at the half, 10-2.

With an eight-goal lead, Chelsea began to settle the ball and play a passing game. Unfortunately, GMVS was not ready to settle for the loss. The GMVS girls came out strong and intense and scored four unanswered goals, closing Chelsea's gap to 10-6. Chelsea's let-down enabled GMVS to score three more goals before Chelsea's Spencer tallied the final goal. When the final horn sounded the Lady Devils had the 12-9 lead.

L. Smith and K. Upham paced Chelsea with three goals each. H. Bonasera and S. Bonasera had two goals each; Spencer and Olivia Conner also scored for Chelsea. Laura Upham had eight saves. Ally Moore led GMVS with three goals.

Chelsea faced the Randolph Galloping Ghosts Wednesday, away.
