Lady Hornets Win In Opening Game The 10th seeded Long Trail Lynx proved to be little competition for the seventh seeded Whitcomb as the Lady Hornets spanked their guests 8-zip in playoff action last Friday in Bethel. Whitcomb took a three-run lead in the bottom of the first inning, added three more in the fifth and two in the sixth on their way to the shut-out victory. A single to left by Molly Taylor got things started for the Hornets. Emily Wright brought her across the plate two batters later with another poke to left. Chelsie Brown then scored Wright with a single. An RBI-triple by Tia McKenna scored Brown before the inning ended. Both teams had some activity in the fifth, but only Whitcomb benefited from it. In the top, Long Trail loaded the bases with two out before the Hornets stranded the runners with the third strike- out of the inning. The Hornets responded in the bottom. Taylor walked to get on, then scored off Allison Richards' double. Wright scored Richards with a single past short. Maggie Eddy singled, stole both second and third and scored on a tag-up on Browns' pop fly. Megan Morse and Richards scored the last two runs in the sixth. Morse singled to left while Richards singled to center, scoring Morse for a 2- RBI game. Wright singled home Richards for a 3-RBI contest. Taylor pitched a complete game, striking out nine and walking seven. The Hornets traveled to Ludlow to face the secondseeded Black River Presidents Wednesday in the quarterfinals. |
