Wooly Workshops
For Kids and Moms

Naomi Husher of Brookfield and her cousin, Shelby Colson of Pennsylvania, make the acquaintance of a sheep on Grand Vies Farm two weeks ago.

For one week in July, Vermont Grand View Farm, home of the Goodling family I South Washington, hosted a sheep and wool week for moms and children ages 7-11, immersing those families in farm life and the world of fiber.

The Goodling children, ages 11, 14, and 16 engaged the children, while their mom, Kim, worked with the other women.

The 150-year-old barn became the children’s fiber studio. They began their day with handcrafts, followed by lunch in the hayloft.

Then came animal lessons. Children learned about the sheep, llama, angora rabbits and chickens, then they got to do some chores.

In the afternoon they learned to we3ave on small lap looms or on hand made drop spindles.

Meanwhile the moms were busy. Within a week, they had washed and carded a fleece, dyed wool batts, color blended the batts and made drop spindles. They learned to use the picker, hand cards, drum carder, drop spindles, and spinning wheels.

More events will be offered in October.
