Child Safety

Forum Is Aug. 7

Starting next Thursday, the Randolph Area Care Team will host the first of a series of informational meetings to respond to the recent tragic events culminating in the death of Brooke Bennett.

The first forum, on Thursday, Aug. 7, 7-9 p.m., on the Vermont Technical College campus in the Old Dorm Lounge, will learn about sexual abuse issues, ranging from victims’ rights and reporting laws, to sex offender laws.

"These meetings are aimed at starting a discussion in our community, so that we ensure we are doing all we can so that all children, parents, and citizens of our community feel as safe as possible from abuse," said Jeff Rothenberg, coordinator for the Care Team.

Senator Dick Sears, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will explain the different issues the legislature and governor have faced as they have debated and made changes to sex offender laws, during recent legislative sessions.

Following will be shorter presentations on the Department of Children and Family’s reporting laws, the sex offender registry, and the perspectives of victims’ rights advocates, state’s attorneys, and public defenders.

From 8-9 p.m., Rothenberg added, there will be the opportunity to meet in smaller groups with legislators, to allow for more opportunities for people to express their opinions to our elected representatives.

"We encourage people to come and listen, ask questions, and give feedback," he said. "Any adolescent who wants to attend is welcome."
