Librarian Made

The Right Call

We are responding to the front page article last week in the Times Argus regarding our librarian, Amy Grasmick, who resisted the attempt of investigators to confiscate the library’s computer without a warrant.

While some may think she was impeding an investigation, what she was doing in reality was making sure the right, guaranteed by our Constitution, of citizens of this great country of ours to be free of illegal search and seizure without a warrant.

Despite the fact that the subject of the investigators’ search was to put behind bars a despicable perpetrator of a horrendous crime, even such a noble cause needs to be carried out in a legal way. Indeed, if the investigators had secured evidence without a warrant, the defense attorneys could well have had that evidence denied in court because it was obtained illegally.

We must be very careful, especially in times of high emotion, to make sure that everyone’s rights, of the innocent and even those of criminals, are respected.
