The Whitcomb Hornet baseball team made it all the way to the semifinal game against the top-seeded Black River Presidents before bowing out of the post-season last Wednesday in Ludlow. Black River defeated Whitcomb 16-1, but it wasn’t all bad. Matthew Durfee proved to be a thorn in President David O’Neil’s side out in centerfield, as the first year senior snagged not one, not two, but all three of the fly balls that O’Neil sent deep into center in the first, second, and fourth innings of a game that overwhelmingly belonged to Black River. Durfee also nabbed the only other centerfield swat, going four-for-four at center, then drove in the only Hornet run (Jacob Hunt), with a swat of his own to center. So, if nothing else, Durfee proved to be "king of centerfield" in his last Hornet outing. Senior Hunt had nailed the ball, singling on, and then moved around into scoring position. Black River scored three unearned runs in the first inning, and another in the third, as Whitcomb struggled to get started. Whitcomb’s Ben Cayer was the only Hornet to get on base in the first three innings. Ryan Rogler reached in the fourth, but got caught in a run-down, ending the inning for the fourth scoreless time. Durfee ended the shutout bid in the fifth, before Black River went on to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Adam Sennett had a nice single to right field as well. In the sixth, Ryan Litchfield got on with a hit to right, but a slow return to base had him out for a quick number two. An error put Ryan Rogler on, but Black River got the third out on the next batter. Whitcomb ends the season at 8-7, and loses Kyle Ketner, Hunt, Durfee, Ryan Litchfield and Ryan Rogler to graduation. ____________ |
