The Real Reasons
For Iraq Invasion

Last Saturday’s New York Times had an editorial that throws some light of what is actually behind our military occupation—notice I didn’t say war—of Iraq.

The piece explains that a U.N. resolution authorizing the American role in that unfortunate country expires at the end of this year, and that the two governments have been quietly negotiating a deal. The editorial says, "Despite the importance of this issue, the White House is refusing to divulge details of its position. But according to Iraqi leaders, who went public with their complaints this week, Washington is insisting on keeping 50 long-term bases in Iraq."

This information, together with McCain’s remark that we may be in Iraq for 100 years gives pretty clear evidence as to why we are in Iraq. It has nothing to do with Bush and Cheney lies about weapons of mass destruction or ties to Al Qaeda; nor Thomas Friedman’s endless columns about our bringing democracy and modernity to the Near East. It’s oil, and easy cruise missile range of the Israel-Palestine Conflict.
