On the Big Tree! Congratualions—Randolph, Vermont has a national champion tree! The sweet crabapple located on the small green park in front of the municipal building is the largest tree of its kind in the United States known to American Forests. This tree is part of the 2008 National Register of Big Trees, a list of the largest trees in the United States, which has been kept by American Forests since 1940. Big trees stand as excellent examples of the ecosystem services that all trees provide to the environment, including water filtration, cleaner air, habitat for animals, carbon sequestration, and storm water mitigation. Humans also benefit from many of the services that trees provide. The larger the tree the greater the capacity it has to carry out these actions. In a world where the effects of climate change are already being seen, protecting trees and forests is essential to both environmental and human health. It is also important to protect the spaces where trees live, from national forests to urban areas. American Forests urges Randolph to take pride in its champion crabapple tree and to protect the tree and land it grows on from any human harm. Deborah Gangloff, Exec. Dir.
