End of Regular Season
For Whitcomb Boys
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb Hornet boys’ baseball team finished the regular season on the down side, losing their last four outings with the most recent defeat at the hands of the Bucks in South Ryegate last Thursday.

Although the Hornets were not able to beat their hosts, they were able to keep them from getting a shutout victory that was fast-approaching, as Whitcomb entered the seventh.

With 12 runs, the bucks appeared to have the shutout in hand, but Ryan Litchfield, Ryan Rogler and Coach Jim Noel had other plans. Litchfield singled and stole both second and third. Rogler got the sign for the bunt and laid it down as Litchfield headed for home, scoring the lone Hornet run, on the sacrifice suicide squeeze play.

Coach Noel said, "We didn’t want to get shutout. We wanted so badly to score just one run, so we set up the play and made it happen. Rogler’s bunt was perfect. Litchfield’s timing was perfect. We weren’t shutout; we just lost the game."

Despite the losses, the Hornets have nothing to hang their heads about, considering what they accomplished this season as opposed to last year. Last year they didn’t win a single game, and this year after their initial season opening loss, they went on a winning spree that had the Hornets and their fans elated with five victories in a row.
