For RUHS Softball
By Hannah Becker
The Randolph Ghosts varsity softball team played three games this past week, while getting one rain-out. RUHS beat Vergennes away, fell to Lyndon at home, and beat Oxbow at home.
Win at Vergennes
The Ghosts showed another strong outing in Vergennes last week, walking away with an 18-1 win. They came out very aggressively in the first inning scoring three runs on four hits. They kept up the offensive pressure throughout the game, scoring in every inning. The second inning was another big one, with the Ghosts pushing across five more runs. In the third inning, Randolph scored eight more runs, on three hits, three walks, and two Vergennes errors.
In the fourth inning Vergennes came alive and had their only offensive life, scoring one run, on one hit, one walk, and one Randolph error. But Randolph kept pushing, scoring one more run in each of the fourth and the fifth innings, when the game was called with Randolph ahead 18-1.
Katie Jickling was 2-3 with 4 RBI and Amanda Gersteinmaier was 2-3 with 2 RBI. Amanda Angell pitched for Randolph going, 5 IP, 2 BB, 1 H, and 4 K. D. Lane pitched for Vergennes going 5 IP 3 K, 3 BB, and 11 H.
Loss vs. Lyndon
It was a rough Saturday morning for Randolph when they faced Lyndon for the second time this season. Randolph did not play their best and Lyndon took complete advantage of it. Randolph's defense was good through the first out, but after a dropped ball in the outfield it was all downhill. Lyndon put a run on the board in the first inning with a Randolph error, a pass ball and a sacrifice bunt.
Randolph couldn't get their bats going and Lyndon pushed more runs across the board in the second inning, scoring four runs on a single, a home run, two hit batsmen and a walk. Randolph threatened in the second inning with two base runners, but were not able to score throughout the entire game.
Lyndon, on the other hand, pushed two more across in the fifth, and their final run in the top of the seventh, leaving Randolph to walk away with an 8-0 loss. Molly Poirier collected the only hits for Randolph, going 2-2. Arielle Connolly pitched for Randolph with 7 IP, 4 H, 7 K, 3 BB. E. Hamel pitched for Lyndon with 7 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, and 8 K.
Win vs. Oxbow
Randolph got their feet back under them with a win over Oxbow on Tuesday. Oxbow came out aggressively in the first inning scoring a run on a hit and a few pass balls. Randolph kept their composure throughout the game and didn't get down on themselves. The Ghosts came out strong in the first inning also, with two hits, a sacrifice bunt, an Oxbow error and a walk, that scored two runs.
The remainder of the game was defensively sound for Randolph, only allowing Oxbow to score one run in each the third and fourth innings, on six hits, and one walk. Randolph's offense was explosive for the remainder of the game, as they scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings. The Ghosts’ best inning was in the fifth, scoring four runs on two hits, two walks, and an Oxbow error. Randolph finished it off in the sixth, scoring their final run on two walks, and two pass balls.
Jickling was 2-2 while Connolly went 4-4. Angell pitched for Randolph going 7 IP, 4 hits, 2 K, 0 BB.
The Ghosts travelled to U-32 on Wednesday, Lamoille on Thursday, play a double-header against Harwood at home on Saturday, and play U-32 again at home next Tuesday.
