After a few rainouts the Randolph varsity girls softball team got their season underway this week playing games at Northfield, Lyndon, and Oxbow, and playing home against Lamoille. Win at Northfield The Ghosts started their season off very strong with a 20-0 win over Northfield in six innings. Randolph came out swinging, scoring seven runs in the first inning with four singles, three walks and one Northfield error. The Randolph defense was very strong throughout the game, holding Northfield to one hit. The second inning was another good one for Randolph as they scored five runs on three hits, two walks, and two errors. The Ghosts then added two more runs to Randolph came out really big in the sixth inning, scoring six more runs on four hits, one walk, and two Northfield errors, capping their total runs at 20. Heather Mugford was 4-5, Ashley Chase was 2-4 and Molly Poirier had 3 RBIs. Amanda Angell pitched the shutout for Randolph with 6 IP, 0ER, 5 K, 1 H, and 3 BB. Loss vs. Lamoille Randolph played its home opener on Thursday against a solid Lamoille team. The Ghosts started out slow, allowing Lamoille to score on an error and a single in the top of the first inning. Randolph couldn't answer and it didn't take long for Lamoille to strike again, scoring two runs in the third inning on a two-base error, a walk, and a single. The Ghosts went down 1-2-3 in the third with two strikeouts and a groundout. In the fifth inning Lamoille had a leadoff single, which would score their fourth run. Randolph held Lamoille off in the sixth and in the bottom of the inning the Ghosts got their bats going. Katie Jickling reached on an error, giving the Ghosts a base runner with one out. Arielle Connolly followed that up with a single, bringing Gwen Reis to the plate. With two on and one out Reis hit a three-run home run to left field, putting the Ghosts back in the game, down 4-3. Randolph held off the Lamoille bats in the final inning but were not able to score themselves. They lost the game 4-3. Reis was 1-3 with a three-run home run. Connolly pitched for Randolph, going 7 IP, 1 ER, 9 K, 1 BB. Kylie Pratt picked up the win for Lamoille with 7 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 10 K, 2 BB. Loss at Lyndon Randolph traveled to Lyndon for a long, hard-fought battle on Saturday. The Ghosts came out swinging in the top of the first inning, stringing together two Lyndon errors and singles by Amanda Gersteinmaier and Reis to score two runs. The Randolph defense held strong in the first inning, holding off the Lyndon hitters. Randolph struck again in the second with a Lyndon error and a single from Angell to score another run. But Lyndon had life in the bottom of the second, putting together a Ghosts error and a single to score a run. Lyndon managed Randolph's bats for the next three innings. Unfortunately for Randolph Lyndon didn't go down so easy. In the fourth inning Lyndon scored two runs on two base hits. In the 5th inning they scored their fourth run on a walk and a Randolph error. The sixth inning was all Randolph. Gersteinmaier had a single, moved to second on a Poirier groundout and scored the tying run on an Ashley Chase RBI single. The game was quiet in the seventh inning, with both teams going down 1-2-3. So on to extra innings they went. It looked promising for the Ghosts in the 8th when they had the bases loaded with one out. Reis was at third when Ashley Chase came up to bat. Coach Stewart called the suicide squeeze play. It was a very close play at home and a very controversial call but Reis was called out and the Ghosts couldn't manage to score again. In the bottom of the 10th inning Lyndon had two on and one out when E. Hamel had a base hit to drive in the winning run for the walk-off win. Both Gersteinmaier and Ashley Chase were 2-4. Angell pitched a great game for the Ghosts going 10 IP, 3 K, 3 BB, and 3 ER. E. Hamel pitched for Lyndon going 10 IP, 8 K, 1 BB, and 3 ER. Win at Oxbow The Ghosts softball team took another bus trip, going to Oxbow on Monday. Randolph jumped on top in the first inning, scoring six runs on seven base hits and one walk. Again in the second inning Randolph scored five runs on one hit, three walks and two Oxbow errors. The Ghosts defense was very strong throughout the entire game, keeping Oxbow from scoring runs. In the third inning Oxbow scored when a run came in on an illegal pitch, and again in the seventh on a very close play at the plate. The Ghosts were silenced from the third inning on until Connolly hit a two-run home run to left center field in the top of the seventh to cap off Randolph's run total at 13. The Ghosts walked away with another win, 13-2, ending their week with a record of 2-2. Hannah Becker played an outstanding defensive game at second base while Mugford went 4-5 with 3 RBIs and Poirier went 3-4. Connolly pitched the win with 7 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, and 1 ER. The Ghosts play a double header in Montpelier on Saturday, but don't return home for another week. ____________ |
