RUHS Track

Seven athletes from RUHS competed at the season opener at Green Mountain Union in Chester on Thursday, April 17. The team earned a combined total of 44 points, with the four girls winning 29 of those.

Highlights of the meet included freshman Jake Zani’s performance in the 100m dash, where he ran to fourth place with a 12.85 to qualify for the Burlington Invitational. Jake also ran the 400 in 60.2 to earn fourth. Newcomers Ethan Barrett and Phil Lease also competed in the 100, 400 and javelin.

For the girls, newcomer Liz Douville came in fourth in the 200 with a 35.08 and ran a 16.00 for sixth in the 100. Freshman Stephanie Deyette ran the 100 in 15.97 and the 100 hurdles in 23.0, clearing all 10 hurdles in a successful first attempt.

Veteran Danielle Galbreath’s performances in the 100, 200, shot and javelin led the team effort, while teammate Holly Mugford ran a 15.75 in the 100 for fourth place, and a 33.12 in the 200 for third place and a new school record. Mugford also put the shot 25’ 10.5" to earn second and qualified in that event for Burlington. In the javelin, she threw a new personal best and school record of 105’ 8.5" for first place. This also qualified her for the Burlington and Essex invitationals and the Division II state meet.

People’s Academy

At a limited event meet the next day at Peoples Academy in Morrisville, six of the seven athletes tried a few new events, including Mugford in the 300 hurdles, where she placed fourth and set a new school record at 62.0. Mugford also put the shot 26’ 2", which earned fourth place and qualified her for the Essex Invitational in that event.

The high school team next competes at U-32 this coming Wednesday. The junior and senior high teams have been training all week during their April break. The junior high team is looking forward to its first meet at Peoples on Wednesday, May 7.
