New Farm Stand A new farm stand will open on Memorial Day weekend, on the porch and grounds of Eaton’s Sugarhouse Restaurant in Royalton. Bumper Crop is an offspring of a successful gardening business run by Susan Elder and Ginny Burnham. The business, which will provide fruits and vegetables from local growers, will be open Tuesday through Sunday, from May 23 through the end of October. Elder and Burnham both grew up in Vermont in the 1950s and have fond memories of living close to the land and enjoying animals. Elder grew up in Ryegate on Ticklenaked Pond "next to my grandparents’ farm where we all helped pick stone and bring in the hay. Fun was going into the garden to pick a carrot out of the ground and wiping off the dirt and having a little snack. I still enjoy that simple pleasure." Burnham spent her formative years in South Royalton where her family had a one-cow farm with pigs, chickens and a large garden where she could indulge herself with sun-hot tomatoes. As a child she enjoyed selling vegetables from their farm stand at the foot of Dairy Hill. Bumper Crop will also sell starter annual and perennial plants, hanging baskets, fresh flower bouquets, cider, lemon curd, apple chutneys, granola bars, and other treats from favorite family recipes. Handmade crafts and gift items made by local craftspeople, including knitted baby hats and sweaters, dishcloths, catnip toys, cutting boards, dog biscuits, decorative wreaths, lip balms and bath items, will round out the offerings. A grand opening celebration will take place later in the season. ____________ |
