It’s the "same old, same old," as the Whitcomb Lady Hornets gear up for the start of softball with no field practice and little to no outside practice (in the school parking lot, of course) before their opening game against the Williamstown Blue Devils scheduled for April 15 at Williamstown. With coach Ray Colton and his assistant coach, Dave Brown, at the helm for their 11th season, the Lady Hornets are in excellent hands. Deemed "a work in progress" by Colton, his Lady Hornets number 14, with less than half of the players having any experience. Only three positions are filled at the moment, as it’s difficult to assign positions without being able to get outdoors. Led by seniors Emily Wright, Brittany Washburn, Molly Taylor, Tia McKenna, all four-year players, and with the return of Demi Aldrighetti (out last year due to a torn ACL surgery and recovery), Whitcomb has a solid core group of leaders. Wright will man third base. Taylor commands from the mound and plays shortstop for relief and McKenna will anchor the plate. Aldrighetti hopes to get back behind the batter and cover the plate at some point this season, and Washburn will move around in the outfield. Sophomore Virginia Wortman returns, while classmate, Allison Richards hopes to see some action before the season’s end after injuries sidelined her in soccer and ACL surgery, and rehab had her sitting out the basketball season as well. Both play infield positions. New to the program are freshmen Savannah Mason, Cara Richardson, Jennell Soule, Mariah Stearns and Sharon Academy’s Lark Delaney (TSA does not field a softball team). Also joining the team are eighth graders Rebecca Burns and Leanne Ketner. An 11-5 season last year changed to a 9-7 season-ending record as Whitcomb was forced to forfeit two wins when South Royalton registered a "use of an illegal player" challenge against the Hornets and won. Ironically, the player was a South Royalton eighth grader who played on the Whitcomb junior high team, as South Royalton didn’t field a team. Whitcomb opens the season against Williamstown on the road and then is scheduled to play the Rockettes on Thursday, April 24, the Trojans on Saturday, April 26, and the Blue Devils on April 29 in Bethel. ____________ |
