BARNARD—John H. McCosker, 83, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor. He was born on July 13, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisc., the son of Henry Shannon and Mae (Bruens) McCosker. He served in the United States Marines from 1943-45 as a communication specialist in a JASCO Unit. His combat tour took him to the Mariana Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and Nagasaki. Following military service, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1949 with a BA in business administration. On July 22, 1950 he married Patricia Frances Kane. They lived in Milwaukee briefly, where he began a 35-year career with Aetna Life and Casualty Company. He served as field representative and later as marketing manager and general manager in several field offices throughout the eastern region. During this time, he also became a chartered property casualty underwriter. He retired in 1985, after serving as regional vice-president of field management for both the northeast and central regions in Aetna’s home office in Hartford, Conn. He enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, carpentry, gardening, traveling with his wife, and vacations with family. In 1974, he purchased a home on Silver Lake in Barnard that he renovated, with help from family and friends. The lake house became a labor of love, and his family affectionately named it "The house that Jack built." He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren, playing shuffleboard, and sailing his sunfish on the lake. He moved permanently to Barnard in 1988. He was an active member of the Woodstock Country Club and St. James Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, and enjoyed working at the St. James Fair. He also co-chaired the annual Senior Center Auction for many years. Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Barnard; his daughters: Melinda Weschler of Reading; Mary Burnside of Boca Raton, Fla.; and Patricia Lucas of South Pomfret; his son, John McCosker of Mulberry, Fla.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Haas; and a brother, Thomas McCosker. A funeral service was held at St. James Episcopal Church Wednesday, April 2. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. James Episcopal Church, The Green, Woodstock, Vt. 05091.
