Dicks folder Page 0 letter, Webb, FIXED On March 4, 2008, the majority of the voters of Randolph voted to "authorize" the Selectboard to purchase Unit B condominium at 24 Pleasant Street in Randolph for use as municipal offices. When I cast my affirmative vote, I thought it would count. Furthermore, I thought that if the number of affirmative votes outweighed the negative votes, members of the Selectboard would be bound to honor the will of the majority. Supportive voters may be surprised, as was I, that their "yes" vote on Article 7 merely gives the Selectboard the option to purchase the condominium if they so desire. It does not require them to do so. Such is the opinion of the newly elected Selectboard chair, Stephen Webster, who has seemingly decided that the preference of the majority of the Selectboard members trumps that of the majority of Randolph’s voters. What is the point of having voted on this issue or of voting on future issues if the outcome is ultimately decided by a few town officials? Having been subjected to an arrogant national government for the past seven years, we now have a taste, a bitter one too, of that same arrogance at the local level. Chuck Webb Randolph |
