Stanley E. Smith LITTLETON, N.H.—Stanley E. Smith, 48, died suddenly March 11, 2008 at his home. He was born in Concord, N.H. November 16, 1958, the son of Peter and Lucile (Edson) Smith. He spent his early life in Concord, N.H., Ohio and Connecticut and returned to Concord where he was a graduate of the Concord–Carlisle High School Class of 1977. While still in high school, he became one of the top 5% of nationally rated chess players. A long-time member of MENSA, he earned a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell, through which he also studied at the London School of Economics. Prior to writing full time, he served as treasurer/tax collector for the town of Boxborough, N.H.; treasurer for the town of Wilmington, N.H., and assistant treasurer for the town of Concord, N.H. A freelance business and mystery writer, he was the author of a series of "Five-Minute Mini Mysteries" featuring amateur logician Thomas P. Stanwick, which was published in 10 languages; "The Sacred Rules of Management," and several books of financial advice. He was also the publisher of Mental Master Publications, contributed "Logic Bits" to the Littleton (N.H.) Independent, and edited a collection of "Thinking Machine" detective stories by Jacques Futrelle. He married Julie Wagner in 1990. He was a 32nd Degree member of Tahattawan Masonic Lodge A.F.& A.M of Littleton, N.H.; the International Churchill Society, the Abraham Lincoln Society, MENSA, the Worcester (N.H.) Chamber of Commerce, Mystery Writers Association and a member of the Littleton (N.H.) Congregational Church. Survivors include his wife Julie (Wagner) Smith and two children, Jennifer Smith and Benjamin Smith, all of Littleton, N.H.; his parents, Peter and Lucile (Edson) Smith of Concord, N.H.; a brother, Andrew Smith of Ashfield, N.H.; two sisters, Pamela Schweppe of Maynard, N.H.; and Lauri Smith- Frailey, of Westford, N.H.; and 12 nieces and nephews. Visiting hours and a Masonic service were held March 17 at the Badger Funeral Home in Littleton, N.H. A memorial Service was also held March 18 at the Littleton (N.H.)
