Sardonis Statue Presented
To Kofi Annan, Alice Waters

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was unable last month to accept a scuplture by Jim Sardonis of Randolph—but he had a good excuse. He was mediating the civil strife in Kenya.

Annan’s small Sardonis sculpture, made from Rochester marble, will be shipped to him

He was one of two recipients of the Global Environmental Citizen Awards given by the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHGE) at Harvard Medical School. In his absence, his award was accepted by his close friend and advisor, Jeff Saxe.

For several years the official keepsake of the global awards has been an inscribed, individually-sculpted piece of verde antique granite, carved in a design that Sardonis calls "Sleeping Dove."

The good news for Sardonis is that starting this year, CHGE has decided to give two awards. That means two "sleeping doves" will be commissioned each year.

This February, the second recipient was Alice Waters, founder of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Calif. A pioneering advocate for sustainable agriculture and local, seasonal foods, Waters is one of America's most influential chefs.

In making the award to Kofi Annan, CHGE noted that during his tenure as secretary-general, "Kofi Annan provided leadership in a number of initiatives that recognized that protecting the environment was fundamental to international development, including the ground-breaking Millennium Ecosystem Assessment." He now chairs the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.
