Founder Speaks About ‘Humbug’

"The Nuanced Meanings of Humbug: P.T. Barnum, His Museum and His Influence in Vermont" is the title of the slide talk that David Fairbanks Ford will give Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Tunbridge Library.

Ford is the founder and curator of the Main Street Museum in White River Junction, a museum The Washington Post called "quirky and avant garde." Joe Citro featured it in his book "Weird New England."

Ford will show pictures of odd things, including human oddities such as Gen. Tom Thumb and JoJo the Dog Faced Boy, and will comment on the ethics and meaning of exhibiting human beings for profit. He will also read ads from the F.H. Gillingham store in Woodstock that quoted P.T. Barnum, whose circus gave shows in White River Junction.

Refreshments will follow this free "Winter Evenings" program. For information call 889-9404.
