Final Area Hockey Report
By Paul Easton

In the final hockey game of the 2007-2008 season, the Northfield Northstars Girls Under-12 hockey team lost to Northshire (Manchester, Vt.) by a final score of 1-0. This was the second loss for the girls, giving them second place in the Vermont State Amateur Hockey Association (USA Hockey) State Championship Tournament. They finished with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses, scored 19 goals and only allowed 8, and had every single girl on the team make a mark on the scoresheet. The team’s unity and focus stood out, most especially when the odds were against them. This was a great moment in their lives, and they all knew it!

Despite the previous game’s exhilarating comeback and disappointing defeat in overtime, the Northstar girls came out again in their high flying offensive style. Firing shot after shot at the Northshire goal, things looked like they were going their way. The goalie for Northshire was absolutely steadfast in her refusal to to let one get by. Northfield held a decisive edge in shots on goal in both games, particularly on Wednesday night.

Cheyenne Tardie was equally as tough in goal again, and kept her team alive throughout the night. Abbey Marmer (3 goals in 2 games) was able to score an unassisted goal in the third period, and that was all it took. The Northfield girls continued to scrap and attack until the final buzzer sounded, and several times narrowly missed the tying goal.

The team was awarded a granite plaque as the state runner-up, and each player and coach was given an individual trophy to commemorate their success. Next year, the girls will compete at the Under-14 level. The Northfield Amateur Hockey Association's Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, March 2, 4-5:30 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena in Northfield.
