Pediatric Neurologist at Gifford

Pediatric neurologist Dr. Paul Chervin has joined Dr. Robin Schwartz in Gifford Medical Center’s neurology department.

Dr. Schwartz is available to treat adults with neurological disorders, and now Dr. Chervin brings extensive experience in treating children.

Neurology is a medical speciality dealing with disorders of the nervous system and includes the treatment of headaches, sleep disorders, seizures, cerebral palsy, stroke and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Pediatric neurologists treat neurological disease in children, and Dr. Chervin, who lives in Warren, comes to Gifford with 35 years of experience at hospitals in California and Massachusetts. He continues to work at Children’s Hospital in Boston; Winchester Hospital, where he is chief of the Division of Neurology and was previously a co-director of its Sleep Disorders Center; and Hallmark Health/ Lawrence Memorial Hospital, all in Massachusetts. Last year, Dr. Chervin began providing care to Gifford patients as well, working out of the third floor doctor’s office, primarily on Fridays.

"Wonderful," he says of his Gifford experience to date. "It’s really a gem, with wonderful support staff for an institution of this size. I expect this at Children’s Hospital in Boston, but I didn’t think I’d see it here."

Dr. Chervin earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Vermont and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. He interned at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester in New York and was a pediatric resident at Children’s Hospital and a teaching fellow in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

His residency in neurology was at Harvard-Longwood Neurology Program, working at Peter Bent Brigham, Children’s and Beth Israel hospitals, and he was a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chervin served three years on active duty as a lieutenant commander with U.S. Navy Medical Corps as a staff neurologist at two Navy medical centers.

Today, he is a clinical instructor in neurology at Harvard Medical School (and has been since 1976); and is certified by both the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with a special competence in child neurology. He has been named to "Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare," and "Who’s Who in America," and was listed numerous times in the "Guide to Top Doctors."

He maintains a list of professional memberships that include the American Academy of Neurology, Child Neurology Society, American Association for the Study of Headache and the American Society of Neuroimaging.

At Gifford, Dr. Chervin is available to treat children as well as adults. He has special interests in the treatment of headache disorders, attention deficit disorders commonly known as ADD and ADHD, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. He is available at 728-2470 by referral from primary care providers. In March, his Randolph practice number changes to 728-7100.

Dr. Chervin has lived in Vermont for nearly 20 years. In his spare time, he enjoys fly-fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and tennis.
