Herbert W. Otto

APOLLO, PENNA.—Herbert W. Otto, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 of a massive heart attack. He was the husband of Audrey Fuller Otto, daughter of Floyd and Gertrude Fuller.

He was born October 7, 1930 in Turtle Creek, Penna., a son of the late Herbert and Kathryn (Harden) Otto. He was a graduate of St. Vincent Preparatory School, Latrobe and attended Holy Cross University and the University of Pittsburgh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He worked at NUMEC from 1959-66 and then at the former General Steel, now Akers National Roll in Avonmore, Penna., as the manager of the metallurgical laboratory from 1966, until his retirement in 1981.

An avid outdoorsmen who loved to spend hours studying nature, he also loved to fish for brook trout in Vermont and to hunt. His hobbies included horticulture and woodworking and he crafted furniture. As a pilot, he enjoyed flying twin engine planes.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Audrey (Fuller) Otto; five daughters: Lynn M. (Charles) Slater, of Starke, Fla.; Clair S. Rhoades of State College, Penna.; Diane L. Calfee of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Heather A. Reynolds of Cheswick, Penna.; and G. Jill (Huey) Perry of Huntington, W. Va.; five grandchlidren, three great-grandchildren, and a sister, Pauline Tindal of Orlando, Fla.

Arrangements were handled by the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 100 Owens View Avenue, Apollo, Penna.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105-1942.
