Dentist Supports
Fluoridation

I am writing to remind readers in the Randolph Water District of an important meeting concerning continuing water fluoridation in the district. The district has had water fluoridation for approximately 10 years, helping to reduce dental decay and improve the dental health of children in the system. The water district board (selectboard) will hear testimony from a group interested in having the water fluoridation program discontinued. In addition there will be testimony in support of the program from the Vermont Department of Health where the science and benefits will be reviewed.

Community water fluoridation has been practiced in some communities for over 60 years and is generally credited with reductions in decay approaching 50%. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recognized the fluoridation of drinking water as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century. Nationally, over 170 million people enjoy the benefits of decay reduction through water fluoridation. In Vermont, 46 communities are fluoridated. On a personal level, it is gratifying to see younger generations in our community enjoy less dental decay as a result of the many preventive tools we have available, chief among them, water fluoridation.

For more information on the fluoridation question, folks could access information at the Vermont Department of Health, American Dental Association, (ADA.org), National Institutes of Health, (NIH.gov), Centers for Disease Control, (CDC.gov) or Web MD. Certainly, talk with your dentist or medical provider for personal information.

The water board meeting is slated for Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Gifford conference room. Support for this important public health measure will help assure improved dental health for our children as well as adults. Written support can be forward to Peter Butterfield, town nanager at: Peter@municipaloffice.randolph.
