Questions Raids By Police Dept. Article 11. of the constitution of the State of Vermont says: "That the people have a right to hold themselves, their houses, papers and possessions, free from search or seizure; and therefore warrants, without oath or affirmation first made, affording sufficient foundation for them, and whereby by any officer or messenger may be commanded or required to search suspected places, or to seize any person or persons, his her or their property, not particularly described, are contrary to that right, and ought not to be granted." Judges should take due notice: The Randolph Police Department has exercised over the past year, questionable warrants, including no-knock warrants, which has led to breaking into the wrong house; chasing misdemeanor-only violations; egregiously acting on assumptions; pursuing falsified complaints without affirmation. Now, as the police and particularly its current chief, are answerable to the above, I suggest that the Randolph Board of Selectmen, who are answerable to the people, take notice, and with due deliberate care, correct same. And, the people, taxpayers who not only pay for the above, but who are also themselves, subject to unchecked police action, should take special notice at budget voting time. A bloated police force looking for something to do is a cause for concern. William Kevan Randolph ___________ |
