RU Girls Take Revenge
For Earlier Oxbox Loss
By Hannah Becker

The Randolph Lady Ghosts varsity basketball team split the week, with one loss at Montpelier and a win at home versus Oxbow.

Loss at Montpelier

Randolph lost the first match against Montpelier this season and knew they had to come out strong in the first quarter to play with the quick Montpelier squad. That’s just what they did, winning the tip and scoring quickly and often. The Ghosts were a presence underneath, but the outside shots were also falling, keeping them in the game.

Randolph also did a great job getting back on defense and eliminating the Solons’ fast-break option. The quarter ended with Randolph up by 12-10.

In the second quarter, however, Montpelier became more aggressive while Randolph had more of a laid back approach, scoring all their baskets from under the hoop with shots from Javon Miller and Gwen Reis. The Ghosts weren’t hitting their outside shots which allowed Montpelier to double-team on the inside.

On the defensive end Randolph wasn’t boxing out, giving Montpelier too many second and third chances. The half ended with Randolph in a 5-point hole, 23-18.

The Randolph girls couldn’t get over their traditional third-quarter hump, and fell to 37-28, despite a four-for-six showing on the foul line. Randolph had a strong fourth quarter but couldn’t put together enough of an outside shooting threat, finally losing by 46-34.

G. Reis led the team with 13, Miller with 8, Ashley Chase and Arielle Connolly with 4 each, Katie Jickling and Amanda Bowen with 2 each, and Shayne Reis added 1.

Win vs. Oxbow

Randolph faced the Oxbow Olympians at home on Tuesday, looking to get revenge for a tough loss earlier in Bradford.

Many players stepped up in a big way, leading the Ghosts to a convincing 55-36 victory.

Randolph came out on fire, as G. Reis won the tip which went to Lyndsay Smith who dribbled down the court and scored on an easy layup in the first six seconds of the game. Baskets from Smith, S. Reis, G. Reis, and Miller followed.

It wasn’t until 3:32 was left in the first quarter when Oxbow managed to put one point on the board with a foul shot. Randolph ended the quarter with a 16-3 lead. They went into halftime with a 26-18 lead.

Having a halftime lead for Randolph is rarely a good thing, as they have been known to fall to pieces in the third quarter. But this time, with the thought of revenge on their minds, the Ghosts came out strong. It wasn’t the most graceful quarter ever, as Randolph had 7 turnovers, but nonetheless they outscored Oxbow by 10-3.

All that was left for the Ghosts to do was stay calm and control the game, while Oxbow went into panic mode and started fouling a lot.

Randolph was 50% from the line in the fourth quarter, keeping a comfortable lead. Even when Randolph committed a foul Oxbow couldn’t convert, shooting 3 for 12 in the quarter and allowing Randolph to run to the 19-point win.

G. Reis scored 15, Miller 14, Smith 10, Jickling and S. Reis 5 each, and Ashley Chase and Connolly 3 each.
