Oncologist Dr. John Valentine Joins Gifford Medical Center

Experienced oncologist Dr. John Valentine has joined Gifford Medical Center one day a week.

Dr. Valentine, of Roxbury, has been providing cancer care in central Vermont since 1981 at a private practice he maintains in Berlin.

"I wanted to provide cancer care in a small community near where I live," says Dr. Valentine of why he has joined Gifford’s oncology staff. And, he says, "I plan on being there (at Gifford) for a while."

For Gifford, Dr. Valentine’s experience and commitment to providing local cancer care are fitting additions to the hospital’s long-standing oncology program. Gifford’s oncology program provides planning options for cancer treatment following a diagnosis; treatments, including outpatient chemotherapy; and some treatment for hematology conditions, such as anemia.

"Gifford is extremely pleased to have Dr. Valentine join our oncology team," medical director Dr. Josh Plavin said.

Dr. Valentine specializes in general oncology, including having extensive experience in the treatment of breast, lung and colon cancers.

He is board-certified in internal medicine and oncology. His bachelor’s degree is from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and he earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York in 1975. He went on to post-doctoral training as an intern, resident and chief resident at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., before working as a fellow in medical oncology at the Vermont Cancer Center in Burlington from 1979-80.

Dr. Valentine is a member of the Vermont Medical Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. He is married, with two grown children and a stepdaughter. He enjoys gardening, running and ice hockey.
