Lady Royals Pull Together For Win

By Jane Manby

Last week started off rough for the Lady Royals, losing to Mount Saint Joseph's Academy 58-52. MSJ's leading scorer was Logan Cabanaugh with 17 points, and teammate Melonie O'Rourke had 16.

Royals' sophomore Shanna Duffy had yet another high scoring game with 17 points, alongside Captain Callie Jozefiak with 11 points.

The Royals came out strong and were up by six at the half (30-24), but were outscored 19-3 in the third quarter. "We need to put all four quarters together," said Coach Dennis Cronan, who feels that if his girls could play a more consistent game of basketball the rest of their season would prove to be much more rewarding. "We've got a tough schedule ahead of us, but any game is winable," he said with confidence in his team's skill and potential.

The Lady Royals proved him right last Friday as they beat Peoples Academy 43-25.

Up by six again at the half, the Royals had a much stronger second half both offensively and defensively, outscoring Peoples 23-11. The Royals' high scorer was Jozefiak (15 points) and for Peoples, Devaney Cote (14 points).

The Lady Royals are now 7-4 and in ninth place in Division III. They will play at 7 p.m. at home today vs. Thetford Academy and next Tuesday vs. Blue Mountain.
