Strafford Teacher
Loses Home in Fire

This past Thursday, Newton School teacher Ilene Kanoff was informed that, while she was at school, the house north of St. Johnsbury where she lived as a caretaker had burned down.

Kanoff, who started at the Newton School this past fall, teaches middle school math. Lost in the fire were all her belongings, as well as two dogs and two cats. She is a keeper of rescue dogs and had four dogs outside the house that were injured but will survive. While the origins of the fire have not been definitively determined, it looks like a defective oil furnace might have been to blame.

The Strafford organization, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, is coordinating a fund drive co-sponsored by the Newton School teachers and Newton School PTA to help Kanoff. Contributions can be made to Neighbor Helping Neighbor and sent to 207 Morrill Highway, Strafford, Vt. 05072.
