On Saturday, Jan. 5, Randolph Union High School wrestler David Maxfield accomplished his goal of 100 wins. His wrestling career started in seventh grade when then physical education teacher and wrestling coach, Mike Anderson, dangled a pair of wrestling shoes in front of David and told him they were his if he wanted to wrestle. After playing basketball for years, Maxfield chose to take up this very demanding sport and has embraced it ever since.

In his freshman year, Maxfield ended the year with 31 wins and 13 losses. His sophomore year, he went 22 wins and 20 losses, and his junior year he ended with 35 wins and 19 losses. With a total of 88 wins and 52 losses, there was just time for the goal to be accomplished.

On Saturday, Jan. 5, the team traveled to Otter Valley in Brandon. Maxfield’s first opponent was Simon Flynn from Vergennes. Maxfield pinned him in the third period for his first win of the day. His second match was against Alex Ramange from Otter Valley and Maxfield got pinned in the first period. Maxfield’s third match was against an opponent from CVU and he pinned the CVU wrestler for win #99.

Maxfield’s last match of the day put him against Mike Smith from Rutland; this match was for third and fourth place in the tournament. With his mother, friends, teammates and coaches on the edge of the mat cheering him on, Maxfield took this match all three periods, defeating his opponent by points, 10-0. With the 100th win came cheers and congratulations by all. The win also gave Maxfield a third place finish at the Otter Valley Invitational. Congratulations, David.
