Whitcomb Outing Club Hikes

Snowy Trail to Camel’s Hump

On the day after Christmas, Whitcomb High School Outing Club members Matt Durfee, Virginia Wortman, Dan Noel, and Peter Burgos met at the school parking lot to leave for Camel’s Hump. Tim Aldrighetti, Alec Hastings, and Tom and Susan Burgos accompanied them as adult advisors.

They hiked the Monroe Trail, Dean Trail and Long Trail to the summit. Snowshoes became necessary on reaching the Dean Trail since few hikers had passed that way and the snow was deep. The group reached Wind Gap, the site of an old beaver pond, and looked north to where they could see wisps of cloud rising around Camel’s Hump—a beautiful sight.

Everyone continued to the Long Trail and then hiked about a mile along the ridge to the cliff at the south side of the mountain. They climbed steeply to the foot of the cliff where they stopped for lunch.

The whole trip was about eight miles, most of it through six inches of new powder. Clouds lifted as the day progressed, and by the time the club reached the summit cone, everyone was treated to great views under clearing skies. After enjoying views of Mt. Ellen to the south and the Adirondacks to the west, the club continued to the summit.

After a six hour hike, the group returned to the parking lot via the Monroe Trail and completed the first Outing Club hike of the 2007-2008 school year.
