Tough Week For
Whitcomb Boys
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb Hornets traveled to Randolph last Tuesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 20, and participated in the 2007-08 varsity boys MVL/CVL Challenge. On Tuesday Whitcomb played the Proctor Phantoms and on Thursday they played the Black River Presidents.

Big Loss

The Hornets were no match for the Phantoms, who defeated the Hornets 87-22 in the first game of the challenge. Led by seniors Kyle McQuarrie (23 points) and Jordan Snow (19 points), Proctor took a commanding 25-point lead over the Hornets, who just barely made it on the scoreboard with a Tyler Killian hoop during the first period.

Whitcomb scored 10 points in the second quarter, but Proctor added 18 more for a halftime score of 45-12. A Damian Russo basket in the third kept the Phantoms from shutting out the Hornets completely, while they continued to pile up the points, scoring a period-high 29 points. The Hornets finished with another 10-point deposit while Proctor netted an additional baker’s dozen.

Russo finished with 5 points for Whitcomb, followed by Jacob Hunt and Tyler Killian who both had 4 points each.

Black River Game

On Thursday, the Black River Presidents proved to be too much for Whitcomb as the Hornets lost, 72-28. Junior Bobby Rohrig was unstoppable, scoring a game-high 31 points in the outing.

Black River scored 15 points in the first quarter and 18 points in the second period while the Hornets were in single digits with a three and five-point first half deposit. A big 23-point President third almost tripled the Hornet tally of eight, before Whitcomb scored an even dozen in the fourth with Black River finishing with 16. Nathan Byrne followed Rohrig with 16 points for the Presidents.

Russo led the Hornets with 9 points and Joel Wright had 8.

Loss to Twinfield

When the Twinfield Trojans came to Bethel last Friday evening, the Hornets were hoping to make it into the win column, but it was no such luck. Twinfield held the lead from start to finish with a 67-40 victory over their hosts.

Although Whitcomb won the tip-off and made six consecutive attempts to get the scoring started, it was a single free toss by Ryan Copping that put Twinfield in the driver’s seat. A steal seconds later had Twinfield up by three of a Josh Barnett hoop.

A basket by foreign exchange student Clemens Garve cut the lead to one before sloppy passing by Whitcomb gave the Trojans possession and allowed them a five-basket run plus another free toss that the Hornets were never able to recoup. Garve’s second hoop was the only other Hornet tally in the first quarter before Trojan Senecal finished with a basket that had Twinfield up, 16-4.

Whitcomb showed some promise in the second quarter, scoring 13 points with points coming from Wright, Deven Hill, and Ben Cayer at the stripe and one nice Wright three-pointer. Unfortunately, Twinfield had a stronger showing, depositing 24 points. Twinfield’s Barnett had a most impressive three-pointer from a good six feet before the half court line, milliseconds before the buzzer.

The Hornets found themselves in foul trouble early on, and it only got worse as starters Matt Durfee, Garve, and Hunt had to sit out much of the half. Both teams scored 10 points in the third with freshman Dan Noel having the lion’s share for Whitcomb. Twinfield added 17 more in the fourth while Whitcomb finished with another 13-point period. Trojan Josh Barnett led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Royal Healy with 13 and Adam Senecal with 12.

Russo led the Hornets with 7 points, followed by Garve and Hill, who had 6 points apiece. Hill also had 21 rebounds for Whitcomb.

Whitcomb travels to Danville tonight for a rescheduled game against the Indians, then starts the new year hosting The Sharon Academy Phoenix on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
