For Gal Ghosts
By Hannah Becker
The Randolph Lady Ghosts varsity basketball team split the week with one win and one loss. They won in Northfield, and lost at home to Woodstock.
Win at Northfield
The Randolph Lady Ghosts traveled to Northfield last Wednesday to face the Marauders.
The Ghosts came out slow, but so did Northfield, allowing the teams to play evenly. The first quarter was filled with missed lay-ups and slow ball movement on the Ghosts’ part, while Northfield was plagued with turnovers. The first quarter ended with the Ghosts down 2, 9-7.
The second quarter was also extremely slow and low-scoring. Gwen Reis (13 points) put in a lay-up for Randolph, while the Marauders only managed a jumper and a foul shot. The half ended with the score 11-9, in favor of Northfield.
The second half was much stronger for both teams. Randolph came out in the third quarter eliminating turnovers while scoring 12 points. Unfortunately for Randolph, the Marauders did the same thing, matching Randolph’s points at 12. The Ghosts were still down two after three quarters, 23-21.
The fourth quarter was the big push for Randolph. They needed to win a quarter and did just that. The Randolph defense held Northfield to just two points while putting seven points up for themselves. Late in the fourth quarter, while Randolph was running their delay offense, Shayne Reis of Randolph had the ball, when she picked up a technical foul at the hands of Northfield’s Laura Ostrout. The foul put S. Reis at the charity stripe and gave Randolph the ball back. S. Reis made one of her two shots, sealing the Ghosts’ first win of the season. Although there was a lack of offense for Randolph, they only had 10 turnovers, a huge improvement over last week’s games. Randolph out-rebounded Northfield 2-1. The final score was Randolph 28, Northfield 25.
G. Reis led all scorers with 13 points, Lindsay Smith had six, S. Reis had five, Arielle Connolly scored two, while Amanda Bowen and Ashley Chase had one each.
Loss vs. Woodstock
The Lady Ghosts faced Woodstock at home on Tuesday, picking up their fourth loss of the season, 39-35.
The Ghosts came out slow and flat in the first half. They didn’t run an offense and missed too many easy shots. Their defense was too slow and Woodstock walked all over them. The Lady Hornets played an extremely aggressive game, picking up fouls early. Woodstock was already into the bonus with 1:30 left in the first quarter. But it didn’t help the Ghosts, because they couldn’t make their foul shots. The Ghosts only had four points in the first quarter, with lay-ups from G. Reis and S. Reis, where Woodstock scored 10.
The second quarter was a little better but the Ghosts were still playing slow and flat. They played with no aggression and no passion. The half ended with Randolph down 19-13.
After halftime the Ghosts came out much stronger. They ran an offense and played a more aggressive defense. The Ghosts managed to get the score back to within two. The third quarter ended with Randolph down 32-21.
The fourth quarter was a battle of defense and foul shooting. The ghosts played tough defense and had an all right press. But at the end of the game, Randolph had some bad fouls, which sent Woodstock, a very good free-throw shooting team, to the line. Randolph also went to the line often, but they couldn’t make their shots.
In the end, Randolph lost due to missed lay-ups, lazy defense, and missed foul shots. The final score was 38-35, Woodstock. Scorers for Randolph were G. Reis with 15, S. Reis with six, Connolly, Ashley Chase, Bown and Javon Miller with four apiece, and Heather Mugford and Katie Jickling with one each.
