The Randolph Lady Ghosts varsity girls’ basketball team traveled to the Spaulding Holiday Tournament last Thursday and Saturday. They lost both games, but gained much needed experience against two tough Division I schools. Game 1 In the first game of the tournament, the Ghosts went up against a strong Mount Mansfield squad. Mt. Mansfield came out with a full court press right off the bat, causing Randolph to run the press break. So far this year the press has hurt the Ghosts. They had some difficulties, but managed to push through, only allowing Mt. Mansfield to outscore them by four points in the first quarter. The Ghosts came out tough in the second quarter, with strong defense and baskets by Gwen Reis and Javon Miller on the post. The Ladies kept up the pace, but soon got into foul trouble. Mt. Mansfield was in the bonus with 4:30 left in the quarter, allowing them to pull ahead of the Ghosts on the charity stripe. The half ended with Mt. Mansfield up nine points. The Ghosts came out in the second half ready for the press, and were able to break it with much less difficulty. Unfortunately, Randolph still wasn’t able to convert on easy baskets. The Ladies stayed in the game in the third quarter, with tough defense both on the perimeter and inside the key. The Ghosts added to their score with baskets from Ashley Chase, G. Reis, and Miller. But again, fouls put them in a tough spot, allowing Mount Mansfield to shoot in the bonus after only three minutes of four-quarter play. The foul shots and a late game push gave Mount Mansfield the edge over the Ghosts, 56-37. Scorers for the Ghosts included eight points for both G. Reis and Miller, six points from Chase, two from Katie Jickling, four from Shayne Reis, five from Lindsay Smith, and four from Arielle Connolly. Game 2 The Ghosts went back to Spaulding on Saturday for a consolation game against Brattleboro High School. Again, the Ghosts were pressed straight from the tip, and couldn’t break through. When they got the offense set, they had some unforced errors, and poor boxing out that allowed Brattleboro to control the first half. The Ghosts took a deep breath and managed to break the press towards the end of the half. But it was too late. Again the Ladies were in foul trouble and Brattleboro was shooting early. The Ladies couldn’t come back and went into the locker room down by 18 points, 27-9. Randolph pressed in the third quarter trying to make something happen. Unfortunately for the Ghosts, it wasn’t their night and the gap just kept getting bigger. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Brattleboro dropped into a zone defense, giving the Ghosts a chance to slow the game down and run their offense . The Ghosts never made up the ground and lost the game, 45-26. Amanda Bowen, playing in her first varsity game, stepped up to the line, and along with with G. Reis, scored six points, as the games’ highest scorers. Also scoring were Miller with four points, S. Reis with four, Hannah Becker with two and Jickling and Connolly both with two points each. After the game, the tournament organizers named one player from each of the four teams to the All-Tournament Team, and Javon Miller received that honor for the Lady Ghosts. Randolph plays Northfield away Wednesday, Dec. 12, and returns home Tuesday, Dec. 18 to battle Woodstock. The Ladies would really appreciate you support. ____________ |
