The White River Gallery Reflects Owner’s Passion for Old Books
By Cornelia Cesari

Al Leonard has a passion for old books and old buildings.

In 2004, when Hurricane Charlie ripped the roof off his bookstore in Florida (and then it started to rain), Leonard began packing up to move back to northern New England, where he grew up. He had spent most of his life in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont; but went to college and started a family in Florida. He moved to Randolph the following year, and in 2006, bought the Batteys’ building on the Chelsea North Common and began renovating.

"Do you know how long it takes to set up 35,000 books?" he asks.

The books aren’t all out yet, but the White River Gallery is open for business. The new bookstore includes a large antiquarian section; Leonard is a lifelong aficionado and collector. He also boasts "perhaps the largest collection of science fiction in the state." Additionally, there is a large paperback book exchange where you can bring in your books for credit towards others. Customers can also ask Leonard to conduct Internet book searches.

Leonard is realistic enough to know he’ll need more than books, so his vision is of a spot with something for everyone. He has set up an Internet café, with WiFi access and edible treats including Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, local baked goods, and coffee. The shop also includes an antiques gallery; and Leonard carries local products. He currently has jams, pottery, granola, greeting cards, and the work of local artists on display and for sale.

So far, Leonard is enjoying his work, and feeling hopeful for the future.

"I’m just hoping to break even someday!" he laughs. He shouldn’t have to worry about hurricanes, anyway.

The White River Gallery is open Monday though Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. It will be closed from Dec. 24-Jan. 12. For more information, call 625-0066.
