Close Loss For Lady Royals

By Jane Manby

The Lady Royals lost their season opener at home on Friday against Twin Valley, 63-61.

The leading scorers were the team’s three sophomore starters: Shanna Duffy had 17 points, Logan Russell 16 (and six rebounds), and Megan Whitcomb 12. Twin Valley’s leading scorer was junior Tarryn Bolognani, with 25 total points. Senior Jane Manby had 10 rebounds, alongside co-captain Callie Jozefiak’s six .

South Royalton’s Head Coach Dennis Cronan felt that, "Having only three returning varsity players, the team played well together." With the girls breaking the 60-point mark in their season opener, a feat they didn’t accomplish out of 22 games last season, Cronan was very pleased offensively. Giving up 60 points, however, leaves plenty of room for defensive improvement.

Cronan also hopes to see his girls stay out of foul trouble in future games. South Royalton fouled 23 times and Twin Valley scored 21 points from the line. The Royals certainly have plenty to build on, and still a whole season to do it. "Overall, I’m impressed with the girls," Cronan admitted.

South Royalton played at Peoples Academy on Wednesday and will play the following Wednesday at Whitcomb.
