Rochester Boys Win Bean Pot
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb boys’ Hornets traveled to Rochester Friday, Nov. 30 for their season opener against the Rockets in the annual Stub Stearns Bean Pot Challenge. The "standing room only" event is a mainstay for the towns of Rochester and Bethel, and honors the memory of the man with ties to both communities. Stearns grew up in Rochester and attended school there, but he lived in Bethel, and that’s where his children grew up and attended school. A loyal sports fan, he supported both the Rochester and Whitcomb athletes.

The Hornets entered the game with high hopes of defeating their hosts, but that didn’t happen, as the Rockets claimed the victory with a score of 58-41. Although they didn’t win the game, the Hornets did a commendable job throughout the entire contest.

Behind by only two points after one quarter, 10-8, and trailing by only one point at the half, 23-22, the Hornets were in the game until fouls caused trouble for the team. With Matt Durfee on the bench through most of the third, and both Deven Hill and Damian Russo on the way to fouling out in the fourth, Whitcomb was unable to catch the Rockets, who took a five point third quarter lead, 34-29, before finishing with a 17-point advantage.

Rocket Patrick Crowley was game high scorer with 16 points. Teammates Liam McKinley and Ethan White both finished with 13 points.

Matthew Durfee finished with 12 points for Whitcomb and Deven Hill had 10, Damian Russo had nine and Clemens Garve had eight.

Loss to SoRo

The Hornets welcomed the D-III South Royalton Royals and their former coach Jamie Kinnarney to the Hornet’s Nest Tuesday, Dec. 4 for their first home game of the 2007-08 basketball season. (Kinnarney coached the Hornets last season and compiled a 1-19 record). Hoping for their first win of the season, the Hornets were disappointed, losing to their guest who overwhelmed the Hornets with an 18-0 first-period tall. The Hornets were never able to recover and lost before they ever got started. Both Matt Durfee and Damian Russo netted three pointer in this outing.

The Hornets travel to Chelsea tonight and face the Red Devils at 7 p.m., and then they travel to Danville Tuesday, Dec. 11 and face the Indians at 6 p.m.
