RUHS Boys Win In Double Overtime
By David Cooch

The Randolph boys’ basketball team won their season opener, played away at Northfield, in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night. The game was not a high-scoring affair, with the teams combining for only 75 points in the eight-minute extended contest. Randolph was able to achieve the victory by a margin of one, 38-37.

Randolph started the game out with a quick five-point lead, thanks to a jumper and a three-pointer scored by Jon White, who was the game high-scorer, with 22 points. They were unable to keep up the pace as the game leveled out at eight, even, at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter’s scoring for Randolph started out with a Kyle Connolly three-pointer in response to three points scored by Northfield. But the Ghosts would not see any more points scored until the 1:15 mark, and Northfield proceeded to go on a six-point run in that time. At the end of the half, Randolph found themselves behind 17-13, only mustering five points in the second quarter.

Northfield came out of the second half with four quick points, putting them ahead by eight, but Randolph began to heat up. After a breakaway lay-up by White, Connolly put in a shot and point from the free throw line, to bring Randolph within one, 21-20. White then put Randolph into the lead with a three-pointer, and the game would remain a tight contest from then on.

In the fourth quarter, Randolph took a one-point lead, 26-25, off a David Cooch free throw, and the teams then went back and forth, with five lead changes occurring until the eventual tie at the end of regular time. A one-point Northfield lead turned into a two-point one for Randolph when White drained a three, but Northfield tied it up at 31 apiece at the 2:45 mark. Northfield held the ball for the last shot, but came up empty, and they got the ball at half court with one second left, but were unable to convert the shot they got off.

In the first overtime, Northfield put in the first two points, but was matched by clutch-free throws by Connolly. Northfield then proceeded to hold the ball for the final shot, but again, were unable to score.

In the final overtime, Randolph came out with the first two points off a Jason Hicks lay-up. Northfield tied it back up at 35-35, when they converted two points on a one-and-one free throw. Back on offense, with time winding down, Connolly found a lane to drive, and scored a lay-up with 17 seconds remaining. Northfield, again, would score two points to tie the game, with a one-and-one free throw. Randolph inbound the ball, and gave it to White, who, with four seconds remaining, drove and was fouled on the shot. He missed the first free throw, but buried the last, and Northfield’s half-court shot deflected harmlessly off the backboard.

The JV boys won their game as well.

Randolph is 1-0, and plays its second game of the season and first home game Tuesday the 11th, against Mill River.
