Lady Hornets Open At Bean Pot Game
By Laurie-Jean B. Gauthier

The Whitcomb Lady Hornets are off and running as they prepare for the upcoming basketball season. With the loss to graduation of Tracey Zisselsberger, Chelsie Brown and Maggie Eddy and Coach Timothy Perreault, the Hornets will have a new face at the helm. Under the guidance of first year coach Dwayne "Whitey" Adams, 10 girls are busy learning a new defense as well as a different offense that hopefully will put them in the running for a post season showing at the Barre Auditorium, a place where none of the current players have had the privilege of playing.

Adams replaces Whitcomb athletic director Timothy Perreault, who decided that it was time for him to devote himself to his young family, wife Deanna, son Zebulon and daughter Ella.

Adams said, "I’m a defensive coach, where Tim was an offensive coach," so the girls are really starting from a different place as far as skills are concerned. Coach Adams also believes that team effort is more important than recognizing and giving any player the "super-star" label, and hopes to see scores showing contributions from everybody, every night and every game.

Seven seniors, two sophomores and one freshman make up the roster. Seniors Laurel Adams, Demi Aldrighetti, Tia McKenna, Molly Taylor and Brittany Washburn return for their final season, and are joined by foreign exchange student Aneta Merksbauerova (who has never played basketball before) and home-schooled Willow Griffith, also seniors. Adams, Aldrighetti, McKenna and Taylor have been chosen co-captains by Coach "Whitey," for their excellence in academic as well as athletics. All four are three-sport athletes and four-year participants.

Sophomores Allison Richards and Virginia Wortman move up from last year’s JV team, while freshman Brittany Flint starts her high school career on varsity. Whitcomb will not suit up a junior varsity squad this year. Sophomore Emily Durfee is the team manager.

The Hornets start the season against perennial rivals the Rochester Rockettes in their annual Stub Stearns Bean Pot Classic, this Saturday, Dec. 1. This year Whitcomb hosts the game, with the tip-off at 7 p.m. After years of playing at either Randolph Union High School or Vermont Technical College, the game is returning to the home team’s gymnasium, so this year they will play in Bethel in the Hornets’ Nest. So if you’re planning on coming, get there early as it will most likely be SRO!

Don’t forget to donate canned goods at the Bean Pot, where there will be empty boxes in the lobby. The need is urgent this year.
