David W. Allen

ROCHESTER—David W. Allen, 63, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born March 19, 1944 in Winchendon, Mass., the son of M. Dwight and V. Margaret (Safford) Allen.

He attended Athol, Mass. schools and graduated from Athol High School in 1962. He attended Worcester Junior College and earned his bachelor’s degree from Franklin Pierce College, Rindge, N.H., in 1968. From 1968-79 he was a teaching principal at the Stetson School in Barre, Mass.

He married Wendy Sawtelle October 10, 1970 in Bellows Falls. They made their home in Orange, Mass. until moving to Rochester in 1980.

He was the science teacher at Rochester School from 1980 until his retirement in 2005. Following his retirement, he continued working as a teaching assistant in Rochester until October of this year.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing, going to the beach and being with his family.

He was a 52-year member of the Boy Scouts of America, first as a scout, then a scout master and later as a camp director in both Massachusetts and Vermont. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

His other memberships included the New England League of Middle Schools and the National Educational Association. He was a former member of the Lions Club. In 1993 he was honored with the Outstanding Vermont Teacher Award.

Survivors include his mother of Athol, Mass.; his wife, Wendy Allen of Rochester; two daughters, Karen Murphy and husband, James, of Johnson City, N.Y.; and Sarah Corcoran and husband, Brian, of Enfield, N.H.; and his brother, John Allen of Townsend, Mass.

Memorial services will be held at the Rochester School auditorium at a time and date to be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Mt. Norris Alumni Assn., c/o Bill Baron, 44 Hyde Rd., Grand Isle, Vt. 05458; which will be used for the David Allen Education Center at the Mt. Norris Boy Scout Camp.
